A TEENAGER high on drink and drugs was stopped by police in Dumbarton twice in an hour and found to be armed with a knife each time.

Declan McNicol, 18, committed the offences at Tontine Park, Renton, on April 17, this year, where he was twice caught by police in the space of an hour carrying fearsome weapons.

Police removed the first weapon, but didn’t detain him, allowing to arm himself a second time minutes later.

Prosecutor Kara Watt told Dumbarton Sheriff Court last Friday: “A male was spotted carrying a knife and police were called. When they arrived McNicol said to an officer ‘I’ve got a blade you f****** d***’.

“Police recovered a folding knife from his front jacket pocket. He was cautioned and charged but made no reply. He was not detained.

“One hour later another call was made to police of a young male carrying a knife. Police again attended.

“Two different officers, who had not attended previously, this time detained McNicol. He was searched and found to be concealing a black handled kitchen knife with a seven inch blade. He was arrested and taken to Clydebank police office.”

Defence lawyer Gail Campbell said McNicol had been on “a two-day binge” of drugs, including cocaine, valium and alcohol, and added: “He had been on a bender with several others. He was the second youngest. He cannot remember when he took the knives.

"He thinks they came from the kitchen of the property he had been in previously. He cannot provide an explanation how he came into possession of the knives.

“He has been attacked previously with a knife and if anyone should be aware of the danger of carrying knives it is him.

“He understands that at the utmost these are very serious offences.”

Sheriff Maxwell Hendry, who viewed the two knives in open court, told McNicol: “I have given this matter careful thought, but what we are left with is that I’m dealing with a person armed with two knives in the space of an hour and There was nothing to assure me that you wouldn’t have used them.”

McNicol, of Wyndford Road, Maryhill, was detained for six months. for three months on one charge and six months on the other, the sentences to run concurrently.
